The California Highway Patrol reported a motor vehicle crash on Tuesday evening. The accident happened on Interstate 5, just north of Jayne Avenue at around 11 p.m.
A 74-year-old man was working on the car on the right shoulder but standing inside the roadway, according to CHP. The victim was at the edge of the lane when a Peterbilt truck being driven by a 31-year-old Bakersfield man approached from behind, according to the CHP.
The older man was struck by the big rig as it was moving at 55 mph and was pronounced dead at the scene from his wounds, according to CHP.
According to police, the big rig driver stayed at the scene of the fatal accident and was not thought to be intoxicated. The fatal crash is still being investigated.
