72-year-old Robin Pischel was hurt after his vehicle ran into two rooms at a nursing and rehabilitation facility on Thursday in Richland.
The hit-and-run crash took place on Goethals Drive just after 4 p.m. The preliminary investigation showed that 72-year-old Robin Pischel was weaving across Goethals Drive before he made a sudden turn and jumped over the curb in front of Life Care Center of Richland. His pickup punched a hole in the wall just next to at least one bed.
There was no one in bed at that time. Reports further added that employees asked Pischel to stop his vehicle after he backed out of the hole and drove away down Goethals. Bystanders called 911 for help and chased Pischel at a safe distance as he traveled east on Adams Street. He stopped the pickup in front of a house, which is where officers located him.
Crews said that Pischel was slurring his speech, had trouble standing and was only wearing one shoe. Officers had to stop the field sobriety test they were giving him because they were worried the man would hurt himself. Pischel was transported to a hospital for a blood sample and to be evaluated. Medical personnel learned that he was injured, and had to be treated into the hospital. He was cited for hit-and-run and DUI. Authorities stated that the damaged building was structurally safe. No further details were provided.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
