On Saturday afternoon, 70-year-old Rafael Celaya lost his life in a two-vehicle accident near South Sixth Avenue.

Officers quickly responded to the crash scene a little before 3 p.m. at the intersection of South Sixth Avenue and East Michigan Drive. Reports showed that Celaya was heading westbound on Michigan Drive in his white 2005 Volvo S60, when he failed to yield at a stop sign at Sixth Avenue.

He continued west through the northbound lanes of Sixth Avenue and was struck by a blue 2014 Ford F-150 pickup. On arrival, responders rendered aid to Celaya but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The driver of the Ford F-150 did not seem to be impaired at the time of the accident, officials mentioned.
