A 7-year-old child died and another child received serious injuries after their mother struck a vehicle and the median wall Wednesday night in Allen Park.
As per the initial information, the fatal traffic collision took place just before 9 p.m. on the Southfield Freeway. The preliminary reports showed that a 30-year-old Detroit woman was speeding in the right lane headed north near Outer Drive when her vehicle slammed into a vehicle in front of her. She then crossed the middle and left lanes before plowing into the barrier wall.
The 7-year-old, who was sitting behind the mother, was not buckled up and died as a result of the crash. The other child was in a car seat with only the lap belt on. That child was ejected from the vehicle and sustained serious injuries. Authorities are trying to identify the children because their mother is extremely distraught and may be impaired. The driver in the vehicle the woman hit was not hurt in the accident. No other details are available.
The incident remains under active review.
