The California Highway Patrol reported a motor vehicle accident in Castro Valley on January 28. The crash occurred on the Grapevine section of Interstate 5 around 12:40 a.m.
CHP said a Honda Accord veered off the northbound I-5 road near the Lebec off-ramp. The car crashed through a chain-link fence separating the freeway from a service road, and overturned, leading to the driver being ejected. The victim was fatally injured and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, initially identified simply as a 65-year-old man, was later named as Myong Kim by the Kern County coroner’s office on February 5.
The cause of the fatal crash continues to remain under investigation. Kim was believed to be the sole occupant of the vehicle, and neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected to have played a role in the tragedy.
