The New Mexico State Police reported a motor vehicle accident in McKinley County on Thursday. The accident occurred on U.S. Highway 491. The time of the accident has not been reported.
According to the officials, a single vehicle was involved in the collision. A pickup truck was headed down the highway when the vehicle left the road. It then crashed into another vehicle on the shoulder.
A passenger, identified only as a 2-year-old child, was fatally injured and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was critically injured and was rushed to a hospital. He succumbed to his injuries there. The officials have identified the driver as 64-year-old Charles Lane.
The cause of the fatal crash is still being investigated. The officials have confirmed that alcohol did not play a role in the collision.
