59-year-old Lynden man killed after getting hit by a vehicle in Guide Meridian (Bellingham, WA)

A 59-year-old Lynden man lost his life after being hit by a vehicle in Guide Meridian.

As per the initial information, officials quickly responded to the area of Guide Meridian (SR539), south of Beard Road and in the southbound lanes at around 12:40pm after getting reports of an auto-pedestrian crash. As of 1pm, the initial response to the scene was closing the right lane. The preliminary investigation showed that a 2002 Ford F150 pickup was southbound on the Guide pulling a 2001 Chrysler Town and Country van using a tow strap.

At some point of time, the strap separated and both vehicles stopped. The driver of the towed vehicle came out to replace the strap. The Ford continued traveling southbound and the unoccupied Chrysler hit the man that was outside the vehicle. The victim, identified as a 59-year-old Lynden man, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Ford, identified as 56-year-old Norman J Shiflet, of Maple Falls, was arrested and booked into Whatcom County Jail charged on suspicion of vehicular homicide. Drugs and alcohol are considered to be involved in the accident. No other details are available.

An investigation is ongoing.
