A tragic collision on Highway 20 resulted in the deaths of two individuals and the arrest of a Ukiah man suspected of driving under the influence, as reported by the California Highway Patrol.
The multi-vehicle accident occurred around 6:20 a.m. on Feb. 12 when the suspected intoxicated driver, operating a 2000 Nissan Frontier, attempted to pass other vehicles near Witter Springs Road. Regrettably, he veered into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with a 2011 Toyota Prius.
The fatal crash claimed the lives of the Prius driver, a 59-year-old man from Humboldt County, and Evaristo Hernandez Hernandez, 42, of Ukiah, a rear passenger in the Nissan. The driver and front passenger of the Nissan sustained major injuries and were extricated from the vehicle before the driver, a Hispanic male in his mid-20s, was arrested on suspicion of DUI. He remains hospitalized, yet to be officially identified.
