On Wednesday, 57-year-old David Wensloff, a homeless man, lost his life after getting struck by a vehicle in Santa Rosa.
The fatal auto-pedestrian crash was reported at around 6 a.m. at the intersection of College Avenue and Mendocino Avenue. The preliminary investigation revealed that the man was at the southwest corner of the intersection when he began walking north across College Avenue. On the other hand, a 26-year-old Santa Rosa man was traveling westbound in a Toyota Rav4.
At some point of time, the vehicle hit Wensloff who was in the right lane of College Avenue. At this time, it is unknown if the pedestrian was in a crosswalk at the time of the collision and how fast the driver was traveling at that time. Reports further added that the driver had a green light while the man was walking against a red light.
Due to the impact, the pedestrian was thrown into the air and rested approximately 100 feet from where he was hit. On arrival, emergency crews rushed Wensloff by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Officials believe that the driver was not intoxicated at the time of the accident. Officers released the driver after police questioned him. The Toyota had severe damage and was dragged from the scene after the crash. No other details are made available.
An investigation is ongoing.
