In a tragic incident near Desert Center, a two-vehicle collision claimed the lives of a 54-year-old and a 24-year-old. The multi-vehicle accident occurred on Highway 177, close to mile marker 13, and was reported just before 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Additionally, a 54-year-old woman was critically injured and had to be extricated from one of the vehicles. She was subsequently airlifted to a hospital for treatment. The identity of the dead has not been disclosed at this time.
According to California Highway Patrol Officer Torres, the fatal crash transpired when the 24-year-old woman, driving a Subaru Forester, crossed over the broken yellow lines, resulting in a head-on collision with a Honda Pilot occupied by the 54-year-old man and woman.
Both vehicles overturned. Authorities do not suspect alcohol or drugs played a role in the incident. The CHP temporarily closed both sides of Highway 177 for investigations.
