According to the California Highway Patrol, a fatal crash was reported on Sunday night in Salinas. Officials confirmed that one person died due to the hit-and-run accident.
Authorities stated that the collision occurred near the intersection of North Sanborn Road and Freedom Parkway. A 27-year-old driver of a vehicle struck an Uber driver. The Uber driver was identified as 53-year-old Jorge Vasquez Topete.
Topete was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene of the accident. He was later arrested and identified as 27-year-old Juan Manuel Gonzalez.
The crash further continues to be investigated by the CHP. It is not yet known if alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision. There are no other details available at this time.
