5 students in hospital after a school bus driver rear-ends a van while trying to stop a fight on board (New Orleans, LA)

On Thursday, 5 students were hospitalized after their bus driver collided with a taxi while attempting to stop a fight.

As per the initial information, the multi-vehicle accident happened at around 8:35 a.m. in New Orleans. Reports showed that a school bus, a taxi and a car were involved in the wreck. The school bus was at the corner of Tchoupitoulas and Josephine streets when students were engaged in a fight. The driver of the bus was attempting to break up fight when the bus struck a taxi from behind.

The impact of the crash propelled the taxi into the rear of a car, whose driver fled the scene. Officials confirmed that there were 20 students on the bus at the time of the accident. Two of the students received non-critical injuries while 5 students in total were taken to the hospital for evaluation.

No one in the taxi sustained any injuries as a result of the wreck. Officers confirmed a citation to the school bus driver for failure to maintain reasonable vigilance and for lacking proof of insurance. The identity of the school bus driver remains undisclosed.

The crash remains under investigation.
