A fatal accident unfolded around 1 a.m. near 43rd Avenue and McDowell Road, prompting officers to respond following reports of a collision involving two SUVs.
They discovered an empty black SUV and a grey SUV carrying four individuals at the scene. Tragically, one of the passengers in the grey SUV, identified as 49-year-old Flavio Ortiz, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital and was pronounced dead. The other three are expected to recover as they were moderately injured.
Detectives have determined that the grey SUV was turning left from 43rd Avenue onto McDowell Road when it collided with the southbound black SUV.
The suspect from the black SUV remains at large, and authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Phoenix Police or Silent Witness.
Investigations into whether impairment was a contributing factor are ongoing.
