The Texas Department of Public Safety reported a motor vehicle accident in Pharr on Saturday afternoon. The accident occurred on Rodriguez Avenue, south of Kennedy Street, just after 1:30 p.m.
According to the officials, a single vehicle was involved in the collision. A black Mazda 3 was headed north on Rodriguez when it ran a stop sign. The vehicle then crashed into a concrete fence on Kennedy Street.
The driver was critically injured and rushed to a local hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The officials have since identified the victim as 49-year-old Alverto Borrego.
The cause of the fatal crash is still being investigated at this time. It is not yet known if alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision.
