The Texas Department of Public Safety reported a motor vehicle accident in Van Zandt County on Wednesday. The accident occurred on State Highway 19 at around 3:36 p.m.
According to the officials, a 2005 GMC Yukon and a 2005 GMC Volkswagen GLI were headed north on the highway with the Volkswagen leasing the Yukon. The Volkswagen slowed down to make a left turn.
However, the GMC was not able to slow down in time and crashed into the back of the Volkswagen. This resulted in both vehicles going off the road and into a nearby ditch.
The driver of the Volkswagen was critically injured and taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. He has since been identified as 48-year-old Samuel Todd Oatman.
The fatal crash is still being investigated.
