The Texas Department of Public Safety reported a multi-vehicle accident on Saturday, Dec. 16, around 11:30 p.m. in Gonzales. According to the officials, two vehicles were involved in the crash.
A southbound car collided with a northbound BMW on SH 80 near CR 472. The impact caused the car to split in half, and the rear section caught fire. The driver of the southbound vehicle was fatally injured and was pronounced dead at the scene. She has since been identified as 47-year-old Sylvia Valencia.
The driver of the BMW, a 21-year-old man, was rushed to a Gonzales hospital with injuries but is expected to recover fully. The Texas DPS is investigating the incident. They are trying to determine why the car crossed the centre line, leading to the fatal crash. It is not yet known if alcohol or drugs played a role in the multi-vehicle accident.
