The Texas Department of Public Safety reported a motor vehicle accident in Midland County on Saturday morning. The accident occurred on State Highway 349, about 19 miles south of Midland just after 9 a.m.
According to the officials, a 2009 Kenworth was headed north on the highway, near mile marker 358, when the front left tire of the vehicle suffered a blowout. This caused the semi to swerve into the southbound lanes where it crashed into a utility pole.
The driver of the vehicle was fatally injured and was pronounced dead at the scene. The officials have since identified the man to be 47-year-old Joel Oscar Alvarez.
The cause of the fatal crash is still being investigated at this time. It is not yet known if alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision.
