On late Monday night, 46-year-old Clayton Smith, of Greenwell Springs, lost his life following a head-on crash in Denham Springs.
As per the initial information, the two-vehicle accident happened at about 9 p.m. on LA Highway 64 (Magnolia Beach Road), west of LA Highway 1019 in Livingston Parish. Clayton Smith of Greenwell Springs lost his life in the crash, according to LSP spokesperson Taylor Scrantz.
On arrival, state troopers found out that the incident occurred when Smith was heading eastbound on Magnolia Beach Road in a 2002 BMW 745 and a driver in a 2017 Ford F-250 was going westbound. For unknown reasons, Smith crossed the centerline into the opposing lane and collided with the Ford head-on.
The BMW became fully engulfed in flames after the crash. It is unknown if Smith was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, Scrantz mentioned. Smith received major injuries and was declared deceased on the scene by the officials.
The driver of the Ford was reportedly wearing a seatbelt and suffered moderate injuries. Toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers for analysis, as part of an ongoing investigation, Scrantz concluded.
An investigation is continuing.
