Authorities identified 45-year-old David Curtis, of New Orleans, and 55-year-old Herbert Fernandez, of Springfield, as the two drivers who lost their lives after a two-vehicle crash Wednesday in Gramercy.
Just after 6:00 p.m. on October 13, 2021, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A started looking into a two vehicle accident that happened on Interstate 10 east of US Hwy 61 in St. James Parish. The preliminary investigation showed that Curtis was heading westbound on Interstate 10 in a 2004 Nissan Armada while Fernandez was going eastbound on Interstate 10 in a 2019 Freightliner Cascade at the same moment.
Due to unknown reasons, the Nissan veered off the roadway to the left and crossed the median after which it entered the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 where it crashed into the Freightliner. Curtis was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision and was thrown from the vehicle due to the impact.
He received major injuries and was declared dead at the scene. Fernandez, who was wearing a seatbelt at that time, also suffered major injuries. He was also pronounced dead at the scene. As part of the ongoing investigation, toxicology samples were collected from both drivers for analysis.
An investigation continues.
