A fatal single-car crash in Merced County is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. The motor vehicle accident occurred Monday around 8:45 p.m. on Russell Avenue, just north of Interstate 5, south of Los Banos.
According to the officials, a single vehicle was involved in the crash. The 36-year-old driver from Newman lost control, allowing his Honda to veer off the east edge of Russell Avenue and collide with an empty irrigation ditch.
Unfortunately, the driver was not wearing a seat belt and was fatally injured. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding the fatal crash, including the involvement of drugs or alcohol, are yet to be determined as the investigation progresses.
