In a tragic incident on Sunday afternoon, a man identified as Joseph B. Fulgado, 33, was struck and killed by a Union Pacific freight train in Berkeley. The motor vehicle accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on the railroad tracks near Bay and Potter Streets, in proximity to Berkeley Aquatic Park.
Fulgado was fatally injured and was pronounced dead in the fatal crash. Fortunately, no one on the train was injured. The incident led to delays for ten Amtrak trains, specifically Capitol Corridor lines, while the police conducted their investigation.
Although some crossings were temporarily closed, no other freight trains were directly impacted by the tragic event. The Berkeley coroner’s office released the victim’s identity on Monday.
