During an inquest hearing, California Highway Patrol Officer Darius Rackley recounted a pursuit that tragically ended in a fatal crash. Rackley testified that he chased 31-year-old Elsy Zapien-Vasquez on Highway 4 who exited the freeway. Shen then collided with a commercial truck.
After the multi-vehicle accident, Rackley transitioned from attempting an arrest to trying to save Zapien-Vasquez’s life as her SUV caught fire. Despite efforts to break a window and use a fire extinguisher, Zapien-Vasquez was fatally injured and was pronounced dead. She was later identified by the coroner’s office.
Pathologist Dr. Ikechi Ogan revealed third-degree burns and methamphetamine ingestion signs in Zapien-Vasquez’s autopsy.
