A tragic collision on Friday in Comanche County claimed the life of a resident of Brownwood. He has since been identified as 30-year-old Sergio Vasquez Vardona. The multi-vehicle accident occurred around 7:45 a.m. on U.S. Hwy 67.
Vardona, driving eastbound in his Dodge Ram pickup truck, lost control. Veering into the westbound lane, he collided with the right side of a Ford pickup truck driven by Kolton Ponnie Edward Smith. Justice of the Peace Johnny Conine pronounced Vardona dead at the scene around 8:10 a.m.
Smith sustained serious injuries and was transported to Texas Health Hospital in Stephenville. Despite clear weather, the roads were wet at the time of the fatal crash. A comprehensive crash report will be available in the future.
