The California Highway Patrol reported a motor vehicle crash on Monday morning. The accident happened on US Highway 101 in Sunnyvale.
A Ford pickup truck was travelling northbound just south of Fair Oaks when it collided with the centre median. According to Lee, the sequence started with one vehicle hitting the truck, then another, then another, and so forth.
Three of the drivers got out of their cars at some point, and they were standing close to the crash scene when a fifth car came along and struck this crash scene at some point, striking the three occupants who had gotten out of their cars.
Three people were pronounced dead at the scene. Five of the other occupants were injured and taken to a local hospital.
The fatal crash is still being investigated by the officials.
