A 28-year-old man lost his life after getting struck by an Amtrak train Tuesday night in Puyallup.
As per the initial information, the fatal pedestrian accident took place at the North Meridian Avenue railroad crossing in the 100 block of North Meridian. The authorities responded to the scene at around 10:10 p.m. The incident closed several downtown crossings while police responded.
Officers discovered the 28-year-old man dead on the tracks. The victim was a Tacoma resident. Police said multiple witnesses saw what happened. Through physical evidence and witness statements, police ascertained that there were two trains traveling through the crossing in opposite directions when the man was hit.
Witnesses informed police the man watched a freight train go by, then ducked under the pedestrian railroad arm and attempted to cross. Just then, an Amtrak train traveling at a much higher speed approached the crossing. The man tried to avoid the train, but was hit.
Police mentioned that the traffic control devices at the railroad crossing and the North Meridian intersection were functional and operating when the incident happened. The crossings closed by the incident were cleared by about 11:55 p.m. No other information is available.
The incident remains under investigation.
