In a tragic hit-and-run accident on South Padre Island Drive near Kostoryz, 27-year-old Marissa A. Mendoza lost her life after being rear-ended by Garner Burford, who admitted to police that he was distracted by his phone at the time of the fatal crash.
The collision occurred around 1:30 a.m. Saturday in the 2900 block of South Padre Island Drive. Burford, 31, stated to Corpus Christi Police Department officers that he didn’t notice Mendoza’s vehicle after the accident and assumed it had driven away, prompting him to leave the scene.
Mendoza’s car veered off the highway and collided with the Oh My Goodness craft store. She tragically succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while a 23-year-old male passenger was hospitalized for treatment.
