A tragic hit-and-run incident occurred in downtown Austin early Tuesday morning, resulting in the death of one pedestrian and leaving another in critical condition. Tyrone Thompson was arrested in connection with the incident after police spotted a vehicle linked to violent crimes and narcotics.
According to an arrest affidavit, officers attempted to pull Thompson over due to a faulty headlight, but he fled eastbound on East 7th Street, running red lights. Thompson’s reckless flight led to a collision with two pedestrians at East 7th Street and Red River. 26-year-old Cody Jordan Shelton was fatally injured and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second pedestrian sustained life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition at the hospital. Thompson faces serious charges related to the hit-and-run and the events leading up to it are under investigation by authorities.
