Authorities identified 26-year-old Bret Steinmann, from Giddings, as the man who lost his life following a hit-and-run accident Sunday in Kyle while officers arrested 35-year-old Elizabeth Jenell Mitchell who initially fled the scene after the collision.

The fatal bicycle crash took place shortly after 10 p.m. on the southbound Interstate 35 access Road near Martinez Loop. The bicyclist, identified as 26-year-old Bret Steinmann, succumbed to his injuries at the Ascension Seton Hays emergency room.

A bystander informed the officers about the suspect’s vehicle, while one witness following it until it pulled over. The suspect was identified as Elizabeth Jenell Mitchell. Mitchell came back to the scene on foot and admitted to the accident and leaving the scene.

Officers located Mitchell’s vehicle and found that it had extensive, heavy impact damage to the front end, hood, windshield and roof. Mitchell was taken into custody for an accident involving death, as well as unrelated charges from Hays County. She is being detained at Hays County Jail. No other details are available.

The crash remains under review.
