A tragedy struck San Juan Bautista on Tuesday afternoon as a woman lost her life and a man sustained injuries in a solo-vehicle crash on State Route 156, west of Monterey Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The motor vehicle accident occurred just before 2 p.m. amidst rainy conditions. Initial investigations revealed that a 37-year-old Chualar man was driving a 2005 Honda Accord at 70 mph when he encountered standing water on the roadway, leading to a loss of control.
The car careened off the road, rolled down an embankment, and collided with a tree.
The 25-year-old Castroville woman seated in the front passenger seat suffered fatal blunt-force injuries and was pronounced dead at the fatal crash. The driver was transported to Natividad Medical Center with moderate injuries. While the collision remains under investigation, the CHP suspects drugs or alcohol may have played a role.
