A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon in Carlsbad as a motorist, suspected of driving under the influence, crashed his car into construction equipment parked along east state Route 78.
The multi-vehicle accident, occurring just after 4:10 p.m. near El Camino Real, resulted in the death of his 25-year-old passenger, according to California Highway Patrol officials.
The 21-year-old driver, operating a black Nissan Sentra, veered off the freeway for reasons still under investigation, before colliding with the equipment.
The passenger sustained major injuries and tragically succumbed to them at a hospital. The driver, hailing from Vista, was promptly arrested on suspicion of several offenses, including felony driving under the influence and gross vehicular manslaughter. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this devastating fatal crash.
