On Thursday night, 23-year-old Jonathon Paul Whaley, a Port Barre man, lot his life following a traffic collision in St. Landry Parish.
As per the initial information, the fatal single-vehicle accident took place on La Highway 742, near Odom Avenue at about 10:15 p.m. The early reports showed that Whaley was traveling east on LA 742 when he failed to negotiate a curve, drifted off the roadway to the right and crashed into a tree.
Whaley was ejected from the vehicle as he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. He suffered major injuries and was declared dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office. A toxicology sample was taken and submitted for analysis. Officers stated that speed is believed to be the cause of the crash.
An investigation is ongoing.
