Tragedy struck in Van Zandt County as a collision claimed the life of a 23-year-old resident of Grand Saline, identified as Autumn McLane. On Thursday, Oct. 26, around 12:45 p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety reported to the US 80, just east of Grand Saline.
The preliminary investigation uncovered that a pickup truck, operated by 37-year-old Douglas Pickering of Quitman, was travelling east on US 80. Simultaneously, Autumn McLane was walking in the eastbound lane of US 80.
Despite Pickering’s efforts to avoid the fatal crash, he was unable to do so. Tragically, McLane was fatally injured and was pronounced dead at the scene. The pedestrian accident remains under investigation.
