Officials identified 22-year-old Nicholas Aceves, of Burlington, as the victim who was killed following a traffic collision Wednesday morning near Arlington.
The fatal two-vehicle accident took place on Interstate 5. According to the authorities, all southbound lanes on Interstate 5 near 228th St. at milepost 210 were shut down following a crash in which a construction attenuator truck and a box truck were involved.
The preliminary reports showed that an attenuator truck contracting for the Washington State Department of Transportation was setting up a lane closure for construction farther south of the incident when it was struck by a rental Penske truck from behind. The driver of the Penske truck was pronounced dead at the scene by the officials.
Officials stated that the driver of the construction truck was in the flatbed of the truck at the time of the collision. The attenuated safety feature on the truck sticks out from the rear, which acts like a cushion in case someone crashes into it.
They further added that this feature possibly saved the worker’s life. The worker was ejected from the flatbed into the roadway and was transported to the hospital. There was a 6-mile backup due to the lane closures. The road reopened at about 2:20 p.m. Wednesday. However, traffic was still moving slowly in the area. No other details are available.
An investigation is ongoing.
