On Monday afternoon, a 21-year-old woman lost her life when her vehicle drifted off a road near DuPont and plunged down an embankment.
As per the initial information, the fatal car crash was reported at approximately 3:01 p.m. in the 20400 block of Nisqually Road Southwest. On arrival, responding officers found a small SUV resting against a tree down a steep embankment. The driver was dead inside the vehicle.
The accident happened where the road narrows from two lanes down to one, and a truck pulling a trailer merged in front of the woman’s SUV. The woman was forced to the shoulder. After that, the woman sped up to try to pass the truck and she failed to maintain control of her car and the vehicle swerved off the road.
Officials said that excessive speed was a main factor in the accident. The truck driver ahead of the woman failed to stop, but authorities said that officers are not looking to talk to that driver because there was no collision between the two vehicles.
Officials released a statement that the woman could have stopped, but she attempted to drive faster to pass the truck, lost control and veered off the road. Search-and-rescue crews used a rope system to get themselves down to the crashed vehicle to stabilize it. A tow truck pulled the vehicle back onto the road. No other details are available.
An investigation is ongoing.
