A 21-year-old man lost his life following a fiery, wrong-way accident late Wednesday night on Interstate 45 in Willis, according to Montgomery County officials.
As per the initial information, the fatal car accident took place just before midnight heading south just past FM 1097. The early reports showed that the 21-year-old was traveling north in the southbound lanes in a Honda Accord.
An eyewitness reported that he was heading south in the right-hand lane when he noticed the Accord going north along the shoulder. He moved over to the left lane to avoid hitting the Accord that was traveling the wrong way. After he passed the Accord, the witness further stated that he saw the Accord burst into flames when it crashed into the big rig.
The driver of the Accord succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The driver of the 18-wheeler got away with only minimal injuries. It is still unknown how the driver of the Accord ended up going the wrong way or where he entered the freeway. According to Houston Transtar, some of the main lanes have opened again, but traffic is still slow in the area. No other details are available.
The incident remains under active review.
