In a tragic motor vehicle accident on Saturday morning, a car careened off a dead-end street and plunged into the San Rafael Canal, claiming the lives of two individuals. The victims have since been identified as 21-year-olds Jose Vasquez Gonzalez and Gaytan Hernandez.
According to a witness, the vehicle was travelling at a staggering 70 mph when it entered the water at the terminus of Canal Street around 7 a.m. Despite swift efforts by the San Rafael Fire Department and Southern Marin Fire Department Dive Team, the occupants couldn’t be rescued.
Preliminary findings, pending toxicology reports, suggest alcohol may have played a role in the fatal collision. There are no other details available at this time.
