Authorities identified 20-year-old Michellie Gonzalez, from Cudahy, and 18-year-old Jennyfer Flores, of Long Beach, as the victims who were killed after a suspected street takeover crash Sunday in Compton.
As per the initial information, the deadly car crash was reported at the intersection of North Wilmington Avenue and West Stockwell Street at about 11:42 p.m. Authorities actively responded to the scene and, on arrival, declared two young women dead.
According to an eyewitness, the women were in a red sedan that was drifting or swinging around the intersection during a street takeover. Authorities did not confirm a street takeover was going on at the time but are investigating.
One of the women was allegedly hanging out of the window when the sedan crashed into an SUV that was going through the intersection from another direction, according to the witness. Due to the impact, she was ejected from the sedan and succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
The second woman who died in the collision was also in the sedan but was not ejected. The two women were identified as 20-year-old Michellie Gonzalez and 18-year-old Jennyfer Flores. At first, a witness believed a man was driving the sedan and left the scene but investigators later ascertained that one of the women had been driving.
Authorities did not confirm the witness account. Treyshawn Cooley, who was driving the SUV, said he had no idea what was going on as he approached the intersection. No additional details are available.
An investigation is continuing.
