20-year-old Leon Perez succumbs to his injuries after a head-on crash on I-82 (Union Gap, WA)

Authorities confirmed that 20-year-old Leon Perez, of Yakima, died of injuries he suffered following a head-on crash late Friday night on I-82 that also killed 23-year-old Elizabeth Ramirez, of Toppenish.

The fatal two-vehicle crash took place on Interstate 82, seven miles east of Union Gap shortly after 11 p.m. According to the investigation reports, Leon Perez was driving the wrong way on the interstate when he crashed head-on into a vehicle, driven by Elizabeth Ramirez. Ramirez succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

On arrival, emergency personnel transported Perez to Harborview where he later died of his injuries. His next of kin has been notified. Both drivers were buckled up at the time of the collision. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash. Charges are still pending, officials stated. No other details are available.

An investigation is continuing.
