The Texas Department of Public Safety reported a multi-vehicle accident on Thursday. The accident occurred on US Highway 57, located 3 miles west of Batesville at around 12:38 p.m.
According to the officials, a black SUV was trying to escape law enforcement when it crashed into a semi-truck that was carrying gasoline. The SUV was supposedly involved in human smuggling. The gasoline spilled from the semi causing it to burst into flames.
Two people, believed to be migrants, were fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities are not yet known at this time.
Both drivers were taken to a San Antonio hospital. A deputy was also injured due to pulling out some of the victims from the fire.
The fatal accident is being investigated. It is not yet known if alcohol or drugs played a role. There are no other details available at this time.
