The Arizona Department of Public Safety reported a motor vehicle accident in Tempe early Saturday morning. A car was travelling south on Rural Road just past Broadway Road, crossed multiple lanes and crashed into a fixed object around 1:35 a.m.
In the vehicle carrying three occupants, one person was fatally injured and was pronounced dead at the fatal crash site. One other person was transported to a hospital and succumbed to injuries. The driver, who sustained only minor injuries, is suspected of being intoxicated and speeding, according to police.
The identity of the victims is not yet known at this time. As of 4:40 a.m., traffic in the area remains restricted while authorities conduct an investigation. The motor vehicle accident underscores the potentially fatal consequences of impaired and reckless driving.
