On early Monday morning, two people lost their lives after a sport utility vehicle ran a red light and slammed into a car on the city’s South Side.
As per the initial information, the fatal car accident took place just before 5 a.m. on South Zarzamora Street near the intersection with the Poteet Jourdanton Freeway. The preliminary reports indicated that two young women were in a sedan that was attempting to turn from Highway 16 onto South Zarzamora Street when an SUV ran a red light and t-boned the car, pushing it into a ditch.
Bystanders informed police that the SUV was speeding when the incident occurred. Both people in the car died as a result of the collision. The driver of the SUV fled the scene, but officers caught her as she was walking down the highway near a flea market. She incurred minor injuries, but was transported to an area hospital for a mandatory blood draw. As of now, the identities of the deceased remain undisclosed.
An investigation is ongoing.
