2 people killed after a semi-truck smashed into I-20 underpass (Abilene, TX)

On Sunday morning, two people lost their lives following a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 20.

As per the initial information, the fatal semi-truck crash was reported shortly before 8:00 a.m. at mile marker 286 heading east on I-20. The preliminary investigation showed that a semi-truck crashed into the structure of an underpass. The caller reported that the truck drifted into the center median and struck a pillar head-on at FM 600.

On arrival, officials found the 18-wheeler erupted in flames at the underpass. The driver and passenger of the truck were not able to come out of the truck. Both the victims died of their injuries after the collision. The wreck resulted in major traffic delays in the area. Initially, it was reported that that stretch of the interstate would remain shut down till engineers can confirm that the bridge is safe to travel.

A report on Sunday evening revealed that both eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 20 were back open. Officials said that there was a slight damage to the columns and beams. A bridge engineer found out that the stretch of interstate could be reopened after the vertical clearance signs are replaced, asphalt is restriped and the wreckage in cleaned up. No other details are available.

An investigation is continuing.
