The Police department reported a motor vehicle crash in Tangipahoa Parish on Monday.
The accident happened on Highway 40 at around 4 p.m.
John Bitter was driving east on the highway when he veered off the road.
Then he struck a tree off the roadway.
Bitter was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in the car, identified as Janice Pellegrin, was taken to a nearby hospital where she was later declared dead.
It is unclear what caused the crash and if drugs or alcohol were a factor involved.
The crash is being investigated by the officials.
