2 dead in a wrong-way accident on 91 Freeway in Long Beach (Long Beach, CA)

On Sunday morning, two women lost their lives in a head-on crash involving a wrong-way driver on the 91 Freeway in Long Beach.

The fatal incident was reported at around 5:20 a.m. near Atlantic Avenue. Officials shut down all eastbound lanes for several hours following the crash. CHP received 911 calls about a wrong-way driver speeding west in the eastbound lanes 10 minutes before the accident.

Officers mentioned that the wrong-way driver, a 21-year-old Palmdale woman, was driving a Honda Sedan. The Sedan collided with a vehicle driven by a 30-year-old Hemet woman who was moving in the carpool lane.

Both drivers succumbed to their injuries at the scene. The freeway was blocked for almost six hours for the investigation. All lanes were opened again just before 11 a.m., officials stated. The identities of the deceased will be released after notifying the next of kin.

An investigation is underway.
