The California Highway Patrol reported a motor vehicle accident on Sunday in San Diego County. The accident occurred on State Route 78 at around 6 p.m.
According to the officials, a green GMC Yukon that was headed east on the freeway pulled over on the right side of the shoulder. A piece of luggage had flown off their car. Two children, a 10-year-old and a 16-year-old, went on foot into traffic to retrieve the luggage.
The children were hit by a white Nissan Sentra in the Number 3 lane. They incurred fatal injuries due to the fatal collision and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Yukon, identified as 33-year-old Sandra Ortiz, was arrested on the charges of driving under the influence, gross vehicular manslaughter, and child endangerment.
