A 19-year-old man from Houston lost his life after a fiery, head-on collision Sunday near the Liberty-Ames city limits.
As per the initial information, the fatal car accident took place at about 11 p.m. on US 90 at Lee Tims Road. The preliminary reports showed that the young man was heading westbound in a Chevy Cobalt when he tried to pass an 18-wheeler and traveled directly into the path of an eastbound GMC SUV.
The two vehicles crashed head-on into each other, and the Chevy Cobalt exploded into flames. His car was on fire when crews arrived at the scene. They made efforts to extinguish the fire before firefighters arrived. It seemed that he was dead on impact and did not die as a result of the fire.
The man’s body was shifted to the Jefferson County morgue for autopsy. Officials believe that the young man did not have ties to Liberty County and was simply passing through on his way to the Houston area when the incident happened.
The female driver of the GMC SUV, who works as a prison guard, was taken to Methodist Hospital in Baytown with non-fatal injuries. She is expected to survive. The 18-wheeler’s driver was not hurt. No further details are available.
An investigation is ongoing.
