Tragedy struck just northwest of Amarillo on Sunday evening, claiming the life of an 18-year-old boy, identified as Michael Couto, in an ATV accident. The motor vehicle accident, reported around 6:40 p.m., occurred at the intersection of East Cherry Avenue and Sanford Stanford Street, approximately three miles from Amarillo.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Couto was operating a Polaris Sportsman four-wheeled ATV, heading east on Cherry Ave. As he approached the Sanford St. intersection, he lost control for reasons unknown. This resulted in the ATV skidding and veering into the grassy area south of the road, ultimately leading to a rollover onto the driver.
Couto was not wearing a helmet at the time of the fatal crash, He was fatally injured and was pronounced dead at the scene.
