18-wheeler overturns, takes out highway sign, power lines on I-35 on San Antonio’s Northeast Side (San Antonio, TX)

The SAPD is asking the public to keep away from the scene of a crash involving an 18-wheeler on the city’s Northeast Side.

San Antonio police said that the estimated damage to the power and communication lines amounts to approximately $1.5 million dollars. The incident occurred at Interstate Highway 35 North and Eisenhauer Road, involving a big rig which destroyed a TxDOT road sign and a utility pole. Police said that as the truck was going at high rate of speed when its dump bed trailer hydraulics started to rise. Then, the trailer bed struck overhead power and fiber optic lines that extended across all lanes of the highway.

The blow caused the truck and trailer to flip over and break the overhead wires, which also impacted other vehicles. When the truck destroyed the power lines, it triggered a grass fire and initiated a small fire on a nearby building. On arrival, medics transported both the driver and the passenger in the 18-wheeler to local area hospitals. Authorities have not provided any other details regarding the wreck and an investigation is underway.
