17-year-old Toyionna Gibbs killed and others injured after a car crash in Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids, MI)

Authorities identified 17-year-old Toyionna Gibbs who died after a packed SUV crashed in Grand Rapids on Saturday while the accident seriously injured others.

The preliminary reports revealed that a Ford Fusion was heading westbound on 84th Street SE at about 1:44 a.m. when the driver lost control and slammed into two utility poles. Multiple passengers were ejected from the SUV due to the impact. One of the passengers, 17-year-old Toyionna Gibbs, of Grand Rapids, was thrown from the car and died at the scene.

On arrival, first responders rushed the driver, a 20-year-old woman from Grand Rapids, to the hospital with critical injuries. The other passengers were also transported to local hospitals for serious, but non-fatal injuries. Multiple fire departments provided assistance at the scene. The intersection was blocked for several hours while authorities worked at the scene. Police believe that speed may have played a part in the crash.

An investigation is continuing.
