17-year-old girl died after a single-car crash in Somerset (Somerset, CA)

A 17-year-old girl lost her life after a crash Monday night in Somerset.

As per the initial information, the fatal car accident took place just after 5:00 p.m. near Omo Ranch Road and Mt Aukum Road. The preliminary reports showed that a 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by an impaired 17-year-old Somerset girl lost control, and the car ended up on its top in a pond near Omo Ranch Road.

After the accident, the driver managed to come out from the wreckage on their own, but she failed to help her 17-year-old Somerset passenger. The reports also revealed that a passerby stopped and helped in removing the passenger from the car. The driver was taken to Marshall Hospital for treatment of her injuries while the passenger was rushed to UC Davis Medical Center where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Officials confirmed that the driver was wearing a seatbelt while the passenger was not buckled up at the time of the accident. The driver was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence. No other details are available.

The crash remains under investigation.
